Should a loved one or a friend ever be allowed to force a switch in someone with dissociative identity disorder (DID)? What does forcing a switch mean? Let’s go back to basics first. In DID, a switch is when a person changes from one alter ego state to another, or, in very loose terms, from one personality to another. This is usually caused by a trigger that initiates or activates a switch. Triggers can be either positive or negative. A positive trigger is something non-trauma related and is pleasant enough to cause an alter to come forward and experience happy emotions, such as a special toy, cute puppies, or a favorite ice cream flavor. A positive trigger, in some instances, can be used to bring forth an alter. What are the reasons and repercussions in someone who would force an alter to switch?

Hi my names alexandria and just started reading your blogs, I find them very interesting and would love to know more, I just read your “alters switch” paragraph and was wondering about inappropriate times to do so.. I understand sometimes you can’t help it, but would you personally consider someone who makes videos of there alters switching and having them come out to do there makeup.. would that be inappropriate? I feel awkward watching her do it, knowing it could be hurting them on the inside.. but I can’t really say anything, being not the person going through it, I am trying to research the best places for this, that’s why I’m here.
